Are free destination weddings really free?

Yes, the qualifying wedding package can have no additional package price. No, the entire wedding vacation is not free.

The resort may provide an entry-level ceremony package when the couple or wedding group meets the current eligibility terms. The couple and guests still pay for accommodations, transportation, flights, travel protection, passports, baggage, and personal spending.

Photography, a private reception, extended music, upgraded flowers, custom décor, beauty services, outside vendors, and guests beyond the included number may carry additional charges.

The most important comparison is total value: a $0 package at an unsuitable or overpriced resort is not automatically a better choice than a reasonably priced package at the right resort.

What is normally included in a complimentary wedding package?

Exact inclusions vary by brand, resort, destination, date, and package. An entry-level offer may include:

• A symbolic ceremony and standard ceremony location
• On-property wedding coordination
• A basic ceremony setup and recorded music
• A bouquet, boutonniere, or comparable flowers for the couple
• A wedding cake and sparkling-wine toast for the included guest count
• Selected romantic room, spa, or anniversary benefits

A private cocktail hour, private dinner, full reception, DJ, extensive photography, custom décor, premium flowers, beauty services, and legal-marriage fees are commonly separate unless the specific package says otherwise.

How many rooms must be booked for a free destination wedding?

There is no universal room requirement. It can differ by resort—even within the same hotel brand.

A program may qualify through a minimum number of rooms, total room nights, a required room category, a minimum stay, or a combination of requirements. Some programs offer more than one path.

RIU and other resort programs have their own current requirements. We verify the exact property and wedding date instead of applying another brand's five-room rule.

Can we get a free wedding if it is only the two of us?

Possibly—if the resort program provides a qualification path based on the couple's room category or length of stay rather than a group-room minimum.

An elopement does not automatically disqualify you. The available wedding date, participating resort, required room, length of stay, package guest count, and current terms still matter. We compare the price of the qualifying room with the value of the included wedding package before calling it a good deal.

What additional costs should we expect?

Potential costs include the trip itself, added wedding guests, officiant or minister services, private event space, food and beverages beyond package limits, photography, beauty services, flowers, entertainment, décor, vendor fees, wedding or day passes, taxes, gratuities, and legal-marriage documents.

Not every wedding will use every add-on. Our goal is to identify what the package already covers and then separate necessities from upgrades so you can choose what genuinely matters.

Do guests pay for their own destination wedding trip?

Usually, yes. Guests commonly reserve and pay for their own room, flight, transfer, and travel protection.

The couple may choose to cover a particular guest, a shared event, transportation, or another expense, but that is a personal decision—not an automatic requirement of a complimentary resort package.

Guests must follow the stated deposit, payment, name-change, and cancellation deadlines. Waiting too long may mean a higher price, a different room category, or no remaining space in the wedding inventory.

Do we need a room block?

It depends on the group size, resort, supplier, travel dates, and wedding offer. A formal contracted group can provide structured inventory and benefits, but it may also bring deadlines, deposits, and performance requirements. A smaller or more flexible group may use another booking arrangement.

We evaluate the actual wedding group before choosing the booking method. The goal is a room plan that guests can understand and the couple can realistically support.

What happens if a wedding guest cancels?

The guest's refund or penalty is governed by the room supplier, resort, airline, transfer, and travel-protection terms that apply to that reservation. The wedding impact is a separate question.

Before canceling, check the qualification: if the group falls below the required rooms or room nights, the complimentary package, group benefits, or pricing may change. A replacement guest may be possible, but name-change rules, deadlines, and fees can apply.

Travel protection may help an eligible traveler with a covered cancellation, but it does not automatically preserve the wedding group's qualification.

Can guests staying somewhere else attend the wedding?

Possibly. The wedding resort may limit outside guests or require an event pass, day pass, advance guest list, identification, and additional fee. Access may begin shortly before the wedding and end when the event concludes.

Outside guests may not count toward the room requirement that qualifies the wedding package. Policies and prices are property-specific, so guests should not reserve another hotel until the couple understands the wedding resort's rules.

Can children attend a free destination wedding?

Yes, at a family-friendly resort and within the package, venue, and occupancy rules.

Children can walk the aisle, carry rings, participate in family vows, or simply celebrate with everyone. However, adults-only resorts do not accommodate children. We consider the ages of the children, room occupancy, water features, dining, activities, beach, and ceremony needs when recommending a resort.

Does a free destination wedding include a private reception?

Usually not. Complimentary entry-level packages commonly focus on the ceremony, flowers, cake, and toast.

Some resorts may include a restaurant dinner or offer a semi-private dining arrangement. A private cocktail hour, private dinner, reception venue, special menu, DJ, dance floor, extended bar, custom décor, and additional event hours are more likely to cost extra or require a higher wedding package.

For a small wedding, one private table or special restaurant dinner may provide the experience you want without paying for a full traditional reception.

Is a symbolic destination wedding legally binding?

No. A symbolic ceremony is the meaningful destination celebration, not the legal marriage.

The U.S. Department of State notes that foreign-marriage requirements vary by country and that some couples marry legally in the United States before or after their celebration abroad to avoid the complexity of foreign marriage procedures.

Can a complimentary package be used for a vow renewal?

Some programs permit it. Hyatt Inclusive Collection's current Wedding in Paradise terms specifically state that the package can also apply to a renewal-of-vows ceremony. Other resort brands and properties must be checked separately.

A vow renewal is symbolic, so the couple does not need a new marriage license. The resort may request a copy of the existing marriage certificate or impose a minimum anniversary period.

Can we bring our own photographer or other wedding vendor?

Sometimes, but outside-vendor fees, day passes, insurance requirements, restrictions, or advance approval may apply. Certain resorts require couples to use an approved vendor list or an in-house service.

Do not sign an outside vendor contract until the resort confirms its current policy in writing. A low vendor quote can become expensive after access and outside-vendor charges are added.

How far in advance should we book?

Popular weekends, resorts, venues, and larger room groups benefit from early planning. Small symbolic weddings may sometimes be organized within a few months when the couple is flexible about the destination, weekday, ceremony time, venue, room category, and upgrades.

Every offer has its own minimum window. Hyatt Inclusive Collection currently states that all weddings using its Wedding in Paradise package must be booked at least 30 days before the wedding date. Thirty days is a program minimum—not a promise that the desired resort, flights, rooms, and ceremony will still be available.

Should we reserve the wedding or the rooms first?

The room inventory and wedding availability must be coordinated. Neither should be treated as confirmation of the other.

A resort may have rooms available but no suitable ceremony time, or a wedding date may be open while the needed rooms are expensive or limited. The exact sequence varies by resort and booking method, but the couple should understand both sides before guests begin making nonrefundable arrangements.

Important: booking a hotel room does not automatically reserve a wedding date, ceremony time, venue, or package.

What happens if we cancel or move the wedding date?

Wedding-package rules and travel-reservation rules are separate. The resort may charge a wedding cancellation or date-change fee, while the couple and guests may face different room, flight, transfer, and supplier penalties.

Who handles the wedding details?

The couple makes the personal decisions and completes required forms, contracts, payments, traveler information, and legal-marriage arrangements.

How do we know whether a free package is the right choice?

A complimentary package may be an excellent fit when you like the resort, the room price works for your guests, the package already includes the ceremony foundation you want, and you do not need many costly upgrades.

It may be the wrong fit when the qualifying room is too expensive, the resort does not suit your guests, the beach or atmosphere misses your priorities, or the desired reception and customizations make a different package a better overall value.

Choose the resort for the complete wedding trip—not only because one line of the proposal says “complimentary.”
